Training at Truro Canoe Club
We offer friendly, coached training sessions all year round, with two regular sessions each week during the winter and additional sessions as the evenings get lighter.
Whether you’re completely new to kayaking or have paddled before, our training is designed to be welcoming, supportive and pressure-free. Sessions are adapted so everyone can paddle at a level that feels comfortable, while still having the opportunity to improve and gain confidence on the water.
You don’t need your own boat or equipment to get started. The club has a range of boats and kit available for beginners to use during training and induction sessions.
For those who enjoy racing, events are organised into ability-based divisions, meaning you’ll always paddle alongside others of a similar standard. Some members enjoy working their way through the divisions, while others simply take part for the enjoyment, camaraderie and great atmosphere at race meetings – both approaches are equally valued at the club.
Canoe racing is a low-impact sport that’s kind on the body, while still offering excellent fitness benefits, helping to build strength, stamina and overall wellbeing.
If you have personal goals – improving fitness, learning new skills or taking part in races, our experienced coaches are always happy to offer guidance and support.
Training is split into age and ability groups, including:
- Juniors (ages 9–18)
- Beginners and lower divisions
- Higher divisions
Sessions may include:
- Paddling skills and technique
- Speed and fitness work
- Stamina and endurance training
- Race skills and preparation
Everything is tailored to suit the paddler. If you’d like to find out more or come along to a session, please head to our Contact page – we’d love to welcome you to the club.
